About Deborah
Deborah Tomoff writes character-driven young adult fantasy about identity, belonging, and the roles we inherit, accept, and eventually learn to question. Her stories follow characters navigating what they believe, what others expect of them, and the choices they make when there is no certain path forward.
As a former teacher, Deborah has a love for scientific ideas and the quiet beauty of the natural world. Her curiosity about how the world works, the balance within it, and the things we have yet to explain often finds its way into the worlds she creates.
Deborah lives with her husband, daughters, and dogs. If she isn’t writing, she can usually be found swimming, reading, volunteering, camping with her family, or finding any excuse to spend the day outside. Someday, she hopes to pack up the family for a long road trip west, visiting national parks along the way.

The Falling Year is a story about a girl given everything except the one thing she needs: the chance to see the world she’s responsible for.
Sera has spent her entire life inside a white fortress on the coast, raised for a single purpose. Once a year, she absorbs magic from fallen meteor stones and releases it across the continent, stabilizing the weather, waterways, crops, and animals that depend on it.
Protected by guards, attended to at every turn, and guided through carefully planned days, Sera has never had reason to question the reports that bring the outside world to her. Until a chance observation reveals something that doesn’t add up.
And once Sera notices one discrepancy, she begins to notice more. Sera has studied every river, every migration pattern, every drought and flood. But somehow, knowing the continent through maps, records, and reports isn’t enough.
How can she truly balance a world she has never seen?
